THE TRUCKER'S VIEW: THE 55-M.P.H. LIMIT IS A FUEL SAVER AND A LIFESAVER THAT DESERVES OUR SUPPORT

The American Trucking Associations Inc. (ATA) supports continuation of the 55 mph National Maximum Speed Limit and believes that national speed limit policy should be retained without change. The current ATA position had its roots in the fuel crisis of 1973 when the trucking industry supported a reduced speed limit as a practical way to conserve fuel. Today, the trucking industry continues to support the 55 mph speed limit because: it has reduced the incidence of truck-related fatalities and injuries; it conserves fuel; it offsets, in part, increases in fuel costs; it results in less wear and tear on equipment; and it reduces splash and spray. To improve compliance with the 55 mph limit, the industry has adopted numerous monitoring, enforcement, and incentive programs, as well as educational materials designed to promote drivers compliance.
