QUALITATIVE METHOD FOR THE DETECTION OF IMPROVEMENTS IN ADHESION AGENTS IN SURFACE DRESSING

TECNICA CUALITATIVA PARA LA DETECCION DE MEJORADORES DE ADHERENCIA EN TRATAMIENTOS ASFALTICOS SUPERFICIALES

Development of a qualitative method for improving adhesion additives in surface dressing to be used immediately after application or a short time afterwards is described. Adhesion agents are laminated compounds, the simplest ones being fatty acid monoamines (of the stearilamine type) and alkilpropilediamines, up to amidoamines and imidazolines. The present technique serves only for the detection of imidazoline derivatives, as they are used almost without exception in Argentina. For recent treatment the sample may be distilled, collecting those few solvent milliliters remaining in it, and a characterization test is carried out by fixed volume procedures on the distillate; or it may be treated with hot ethanol by refluxing, performing the characterization on the extract. For both alternatives characterization is performed in test tubes by acidification with concentrated acetic acid and addition of 0.25% triketo-hydrindene hydrate in normal butanol; the whole is heated for 10 minutes in a double boiler(100 degrees C). The appearance of a red or a violet-red color signifies a positive reaction. In the presence of a sample of a slightly older material the procedure consists in refluxing the sample with chloroform to recuperate the asphalt, with later distillation of the asphalt and description of the additive with hot ethanol; characterization takes place as before. The sensitivity of the method corresponds to a minimum content of 0.01% additive to obtain a perceptible color, according to sensitivity assays. /TRRL/
