VEHICLE EXHAUSTS AND FOREST DAMAGES

BILAVGASER OCH SKOGSDOEDEN

The aim of the research carried out at the Chalmers University of Technology is to highlight the consequences of technical development. This hearing deals with damages to forests caused by vehicle exhaust fumes. An estimation shows that 30-70% of the damages are caused by vehicle exhausts. This depends on the fact that vehicles emit a dominating part of nitric oxides and hydrocarbons. These are converted into ozone and other substances in the atmosphere and are probably causing the severest damages to forests. There are thus several indications that the problem is not primarily caused by environmental acidity.
