EXPERIMENTS WITH FINE-GRADED LIGHT CLINKER IN ROAD PAVEMENTS 2. FINAL REPORT

PROV MED FINGRADERAD LAETTKLINKER I GATUOEVERBYGGNAD. 2. SLUTRAPPORT

The Swedish Road and Traffic Research Institute (VTI) has acted as consultant in the construction of test sections with fine-graded light clinker as sub-base. VTI has also made measurements during the period August 1982 -June 1984 to determine the road construction properties of light clinker with regard to traffic load and climate. Construction of the test sections has been described earlier in VTI Meddelande 319. The experiments have shown that, from the aspect of bearing capacity, a sub-base of sandy gravel can be replaced by a sub-base of fine-graded light clinker, in any case if the traffic load does not greatly exceed a certain level on the test sections during the measuring period. The principal difficulty in using fine-graded light clinker as a road building material is of constructional nature and arises from the low internal friction of the material. Fine-graded light clinker has proved to have good insulating properties against frost. The maximum frost depth recorded during the measuring period on the test sections with light clinker has been about half that on stretches built with sub-base of conventional gravel. (TRRL)
