GEOTEXTILE STRENGTHENING OF UNPAVED ROADS - MAKING IT WORK

The author discusses the use of geotextiles in aggregate-surfaced roads over low-strength fine grained soils. He refers briefly to mechanisms and design methods for determining appropriate aggregate thickness which have been verified in the field. He stresses the importance of construction monitoring to provide verification of the design, to ensure proper construction techniques and to facilitate making construction changes where necessary in order to meet the design and performance criteria. A 10-step procedure used by the author for the successful design and construction of projects using geotextiles is set out. Results obtained on the USDA Forest Service Quinault test road are quoted.
