QUANTITY AND SUFFICIENCY OF AGGREGATE REQUIRED BY THE FINNISH ROAD NETWORK
SUOMEN TIEVERKON TARVITSEMAT KIVIAINESMAARAT JA NIIDEN RIITTAVYYS
The author estimates that during 1957-1982 510 million cu M of gravel and sand were used for road construction and maintenance, equal to approximately 20 million cu M a year. The annual fluctuations are rather large. The gravel resources of Finland were investigated in the seventies and according to some estimates the total quantity of gravel is 47 billion cu M of which only about 2% was assessed suitable for crushing. Gravel and sand resources are located rather unevenly regionally; the situation is worst in south-west Finland, in the province of Vaasa and in the surroundings of Oulu. Supplementary materials have been taken into use in these regions. Crushed rock is used especially in the road districts of Vaasa and Keski-Pohjanmaa. In some areas moraine is also used as road maintenance material. More extensive use of insulating and synthetic materials may prove an important alternative in the future. Of the latter filter cloth replacing insulating sand may be mentioned. (TRRL)
