IRISH BUSINESS LOGIC IN STEP WITH EURO SCENE

Coras Iompair Eireann (CIE) the Irish national transport organisation formed in 1945, covers mainline railway operations for passengers and freight, provincial road passenger services, including "expressway" and schools transport, road freight services, urban bus transport in five cities and the suburban railways in Dublin and Cork. The present rail network consists of 1250 miles (1900 km) of line. There are 60 freight depots. Palletisation and use of 150 containers facilitate CIE's multi mode operation. CIE operates a network of road passenger services which is being coordinated with the railways and other operators' bus and coach services. A provincial bus network of limited stop services, known as "expressway" has 40 routes connecting all main towns in the republic. It is integrated with stage-carriage services. A summary of statistics for 1982 and 1983 for Dublin city services is given; this covers journeys, vehicles, routes, modal split of commuter, passenger distribution, staff, revenue, expenditure and subventions. Details of vehicles and locomotives are briefly given. Fare policy is discussed.
