VARIABLES IN FRACTURE ENERGY AND TOUGHNESS TESTING OF ROCK

Each variable known to affect laboratory measurement of fracture-energy and fracture-toughness is reviewed: specimen configuration and loading geometry, crack length and specimen size, planar anisotropy, environment -water and stress corrosion cracking -temperature, and confining pressure. Specific examples are cited where each of the variables have been isolated. For the covering abstract of the symposium see TRIS 452576. (TRRL)
