CAPACITY INVESTIGATION OF A SURFACE TRANSIT MALL
This paper discusses the street capacity of a surface transit mall, which is shared by buses, light rail transit (LRT) and vehicular cross-street traffic. Street capacity was investigated by TRANSITSM, a discrete transit simulation model. The model was used to examine the behavour of surface LRT operation in a mixed traffic system under a wide spectrum of operating policies. The capacity of the surface mall under an existing 1-terminal configuration and proposed 2-terminal configuration was compared. With the mean transit travel time and 2-hour transit flow as the major performance indicators, it was shown that transit operation on the mall was unstable for train headways less than two minutes. The ultimate capacity of the surface mall was obtained directly from the analysis.
