HOW MINI-BUSES COULD BENEFIT FROM MACRO-MANAGEMENT. EFFICIENT OPERATION OF VOLUNTARY SECTOR TRANSPORT IN AN URBAN COMMUNITY

A short study was made concerning the use and availability of voluntary sector transport in the Newcastle upon Tyne area. The study was in two parts, the first dealing with the ownership and type of vehicles, details of their availability to other groups and the reason for restrictions on use. The second stage was an examination of the patterns and intensity of use. It was concluded that there is scope for more efficient use of the resources available. The optimum solution, which would not diminish the degree control by any organisation over their own vehicle, would be a loose pooling of resources under a mutual assistance scheme. A small control unit would be necessary to help co-ordinate use, act as a source of advice and information on technical or operational difficulties and for providing a small vehicle float. (TRRL)
