THE CONTINUING SAGA OF THE TOPPLING COACH TEST. ECE REGULATION FOR COACH ROLL-OVER SAFETY TEST

A safety test for coaches is being drawn up by the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE). This article comments on the slow progress made and discusses the form of test to be introduced. The original roll-over test developed by the Cranfield Institute of Technology in Britain is expensive and difficult to repeat. The ECE has therefore opted for the topple test developed in Hungary (the Hungarian firm Ikarus is the world's largest maker of buses). Other tests are being discussed and include studying the deformation of a single module of a coach body and computer aided design. A move to a roll-over-test regulation marks a significant shift in British safety philosophy which has concentrated on stability testing aimed at preventing coach roll-over. (TRRL)
