SWOP-BODY BUS BREAKTHROUGH BY STRATHCLYDE PTE OFFERS RURAL AID

The article gives details of a dual-purpose vehicle developed by Strathclyde PTE to operate either as a bus or a van. By the use of either a demountable 20-seat bus or van body the vehicle offers a new approach to cost savings in rural areas where passenger demand is limited to certain times or days, and where there is also a parallel demand for freight services. The design allows either body to be set down and left standing on built-in extending legs so that the chassis can be driven clear and backed under the other body. The operation of exchanging bodies can be carried out by the driver in under 5 min. Although developed for service in the Isle of Arran, the performance of the vehicle is likely to be studied closely for possible application in other areas. (TRRL)
