AN EXAMINATION OF HOME INTERVIEW SURVEY TRIP UNDER-REPORTING AS DOCUMENTED IN AUSTRALIAN TRANSPORT STUDIES

Data obtained from transport study home interview surveys is receiving increasing attention, from researchers and planners alike, as a useful base from which to conduct analyses into a wide variety of transport and non-transport issues. Many of these analyses, however, proceed without due recognition of known deficiencies in home interview travel survey data, and the impact these might have on the investigation being undertaken. In this paper one particular deficiency with home interview travel data is highlighted -namely, trip under-reporting. Validation checks, as documented in Australian transport study reports, of car and public transport trips reported in home interview travel surveys are discussed, collated and presented. These checks show substantial and systematic trip under-reporting in the home interview surveys. Some implications of trip under-reporting for analyses which use this data are described.
