INJURIES ASSOCIATED WITH THREE-WHEEL ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLES--ALASKA

From January 1983 through December 1984, at least 20 deaths and 538 injuries, including six persons permanently disabled by neurologic injuries, were associated with three-wheel all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in Alaska. Analysis of the data shows that potential risk factors for injuries associated with ATVs included alcohol use, ineffective helmet use, rider inexperience and inattention, and excessive speed. Of major importance is the finding that 12 (60%) of the 20 fatalities may have been prevented by wearing a helmet.
