DRIVING APTITUDE AND DIFFUSE BRAIN INJURY
RIJGESCHIKTHEID ONDERZOCHT BIJ DIFFUUS HERSENLETSEL
In traffic accidents brain injuries often occur. In Dutch hospitals yearly brain damage is diagnosed in 10000 traffic victims, in particular for people of ages 18-25 years. Above all after long term coma psychological and physiological disabilities can remain, which may influence driving a car. At the present there are no criteria for medical experts to use in judging whether such patients should still be allowed to drive a car. The Institute for Perception TNO is studying the driving aptitude of such patients by driving tests. It is shown that the desired reaction time is sometimes too long to prevent accidents, but further research is needed. (TRRL)
