PROFILES IN SAFETY

The activities and programs are described of the Traffic Safety and Training Section of the Chicago Police Department, which presented almost 12,000 programs reaching more than 370,000 people in 1984. The Section has developed a comprehensive traffic safety program that is presented to both elementary and high school students. This has helped to foster a positive relationship between the police and the youngsters of Chicago. The Section also administers a Driver Improvement School in conjunction with the Cook County Circuit Court. In cooperation with the Chicago Park District, members of the Section also appear at parks throughout the city giving instruction on bicycle safety. This Section also maintains contact with the private sector of the community including various civic, business, and professional groups. Programs are also presented to the deaf and hearing impaired. Members of this Section of the Police Department have attended classes at Northwestern Traffic Institute, and also been accredited as certified instructors of the National Safety Council. Great emphasis is placed on the safety and training of all Police Department employees. Individual driving records are maintained for all members to determine disciplinary action in accidents deemed preventable. The Section also administers the Police Department's Traffic Safety Review Board. Statistics on the effectiveness safety programs are compiled by this section. Roll call training is conducted regarding current safety topics. The section also assists the Training Division and the Research and Development Division in writing and updating police department publications regarding traffic safety.
