CHIEFS RESPOND TO SEAT BELT USE QUESTION

The Insurance Information Institute recently surveyed 462 International Association of Chiefs of Police - member police chiefs across the United States to determine their willingness to assist the news media in reporting seatbelt-use data in all automobile accident reports. Of the 462, 197 questionnaires were returned, representing a cross-section of police departments by size and geographic location. The survey attempted to determine whether police were having difficulty in collecting data and passing them along to the media. While some chiefs replied that there were some problems in the process, a great majority felt they could cooperate with the media on this issue.
