PROGRESS OF POWDER METAL TECHNOLOGY IN THE FIELD OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINES
Due to the unique methods and outstanding productivity of powder metallurgy (PM), it has already become firmly established as a field in metal processing technologies and in recent years has shown ever greater growth. Particularly in automobiles where many sintered machine parts are used together with sintered bearing parts, the increased use of PM parts, which require less machining, is expected to significantly reduce the base price of automobiles. Furthermore, high-strength PM products that could not be obtained through previous methods are becoming more and more common, and in the future the percentage of PM parts used in automobiles is expected to increase even further. This paper describes several advances made in powder metallurgy and future trends while giving some examples of the current use of PM parts in automobile engines.
