THE JOINT INDUSTRY-GOVERNMENT VOLUNTARY TRUCK AND BUS FUEL ECONOMY PROGRAM - AN OVERVIEW

The US Department of Transportation and Energy have combined with 330 private companies to show that free-market incentives can result in conserving truck and bus fuel. The voluntary program has worked to encourage fuel conservation through the development of measurement test procedures, dissemination of fuel-saving data and case histories, sponsorship of demonstrations, truck show programs and the distribution of literature and films on fuel-saving procedures. It is estimated that by such measures the industry has voluntary saved some 5 billion gallons of fuel between 1973-79.
