PILOTS PLOT THE COURSE OF METRO MILANO'S YELLOW LINE
Milan's newest subway construction involves soil stabilization from small pilot tunnels in advance of the final tunneling operation. The subway is two single-track lines, one atop the other, so that the right-of-way will be entirely beneth the narrow streets of the central business district. Earlier tunneling for Milan's rapid transit lines had been cut-and-cover, but streets involved with this segement were both too narrow and too congested so that tunneling machines were utilized. The dropping water table in the Milan region leaves unconsolidated gravels which required extensive ground treatement prior to excavation. Use of the tunnel boring machine for these urban tunnels, the performance of a new type of shield and new finding on soil mechanical are among the significant features of this project.
