URBAN TRANSPORTATION AND POLITICAL IDEALOGY: SWEDEN AND THE UNITED STATES

The impact of political idealogy on urban transportation policy in Sweden and the United States is examined; it is noted that these two represent idealogical extremes among the western democracies. Although urban transportation issues are rarely debated idealogically in either country, the author finds that their contrasting idealogies with respect to (1) planning vs. free enterprise and (2) collectivism vs. individualism are clearly reflected in their urban land use and housing as well as transportation patterns. The analysis should be a significant interest to students of technology and policies. Substantial attention is deveoted to the ways in which political structure and idealogy have, particularly in Sweden, mediated the impact of the automobile on urban land use patterns and life styles.
