A SIX-YEAR PROGRAMME: THE RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND EXPERIMENTATION POLICY OF THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT IN THE FIELD OF GROUND TRANSPORT

The author outlines the main objectives of French policy in the transport sector. These objectives are: 1) to minimise dependency on oil and its impact on the balance of payments; 2) to introduce modern techniques, mainly electronics, with the aim of achieving higher quality of service, social progress and productivity; 3) to encourage research on the application of new technologies in the transport sector; 4) to explore safer transport modes; 5) to obtain a better knowledge of the relation between social evolution and the demand for transport; 6) to maintain and develop in other countries the image of a sector that still benefits from a strong export tradition. A special financial effort over the next six years is being made by the French government to encourage French industries and research laboratories to work towards these objectives. Ten themes form the core of the six-year programme. They cover the modernisation of transport equipment (high-speed trains, new metros, new buses, etc), the development of socio-economics applied to transport and various safety aspects, and the protection of the environment and working conditions.
