LIGHT RAIL IS KEY TO CITY TRANSPORT
A new unit at the China Academy of Railway Sciences is examining light rail transit (LRT). Low volumes of motor traffic and broad streets offer the potential for low-cost construction of LRT in many Chinese cities. Only 4 cities in China now have streetcars and these systems are described briefly. Several other Chinese cities have abandoned streetcars. Now there is renewed interest in LRT and it is being examined as a means of increasing public transit capacity at relatively low cost.
