THE MBTA: OPPORTUNITIES REALIZED
Line extensions and rehabilitation of facilities of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority were complicated in 1984 by two railroad bridge fires which disrupted commuter service bud did offer an opportunity for further rehabilitation. MBTA has been constructing rapid transit extensions to the northwest and southeast of the Boston Metropolitan regions, building an intermodal facility at the modernized South Station and carrying on an extensive rehabilitation program for other lines and facilities. Ridership increased by 3.6 percent in 1984 despite the disruption of rail commuter services. After a bridge fire at the approach to North Station, temporary transit services had to be established but there was an opportunity for station rebuilding and extensive track work. One of the North commuter lines was further disrupted by the second fire, but again after instituting alternative service there was a chance for extensive rehabilitation of facilities on this line.
