THE DECLINE OF RAIL TRANSPORT IN THE INLAND MOVEMENT OF FREIGHT FROM PORTS IN ITALY

IL DECLINO DELLA PARTECIPAZIONE FERROVIARIA AI MOVIMENTI PORTO-ENTROTERRA IN ITALIA

This article reviews the inland distribution of freight from the ports in Italy, and shows that the role of the railways has declined in favour of road transport. Tables show details of commercial and industrial freight movements to and from the ports from 1953 to 1982. In addition to its flexibility the biggest advantage of road transport is claimed to be the facility for return loads. A comparison with some other European ports shows rail transport to have a bigger share of the market than road transport at Dunkirk, Bremen and Hamburg. (TRRL)
