THE SELECTION OF ROAD ALIGNMENTS: THE EVALUATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
SCELTA DEI TRACCIATI VIARI: LA VALUTAZIONE DI IMPATTO AMBIENTALE
This paper discusses the selection of road alignments in urban periphery areas still in the phase of mobility growth and economic and residential development. It is pointed out that though the problems in such areas are generally similar, the solutions are frequently vastly different because of social cultural and political reasons. The three basic questions considered here are: (1) the regional functions (such as distance from housing, number of functions and links with existing roads) to be assigned to the road; (2) regional integreation of the layout in relation to existing activity patterns and proprietary conditions; and (3) environmental effects (air, water, soil, etc).
