COMPARISON AND EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS OF SINGLE AND DOUBLE CYCLE DIRECT LOAD TESTS

CONFRONTI E RISULTATI IN PROVE DI CARICO DIRETTE A DOPPIO CICLO DI CARICO ED A CICLO UNICO

In an attempt to derive a "bearing capacity index" for roadbeds, this article presents an analysis of load tests which shows the shortcomings of the single cycle load test (SNV-Swiss Standards Association test), which by itself cannot adequately define the response of a pavement layer, or enable the evaluation of the bearing capacity conditions of a subsoil. The two cycle test with a 60 cm dia plate proved to be much more valid. It enabled the determination of a coefficient k as a ratio between the modulus of deformation at the first and second cycles. This coefficient, in addition to identifying the typical characteristics of the material defines the degree of density achieved, thus providing a more adequate indication of bearing capacity. (TRRL)
