THE BUCKLING OF SLENDER BRIDGE PIERS AND THE EFFECTIVE HEIGHT PROVISIONS OF BS 5400: PART 4

The basis of the effective heights which have traditionally been used in the design of slender bridge piers is investigated. It is found that the effective heights used for piers which are held in position at both ends are based on realistic end conditions. In contrast, the usual value used for cantilever piers depends on infinite base restraint and on a particular type of bearing. New effective heights for differeent types of cantilever pier are derived. Theses are the values which have been adopted by the 1984 revision of BS 5400: Part 4. The real behaviours of several types of slender bridge pier are considered. In many cases the conventional design method for these is found to be very conservative. An alternative design approach, using numerical analysis, is suggested. This would lead to more economical designs. (Author/TRRL)
