STUDY OF ABUTMENT SCOUR

The study described in this report is restricted to the local scour of uniform non-cohesive sediment around abutments of various lengths in steady approach flows. The experimental programme was divided into three parts. The first series was performed to compare the scour around a half-cylinder acting as an abutment with that of a cylinder pier of the same diameter. In the second series of experiments the effect of the abutment length on the scouring process at constant depth of flow was studied. For the final series, the effect of the alignment of the abutment to the flow on the scouring process for constant flow was investigated. Flow patterns and scour patterns were photographed and recorded. (TRRL)
