SHIPPING OUTLOOK FOR FRESH PRODUCE
Trucks are expected to maintain or marginally increase their share of fresh produce shipments in 1985, carrying about 87 percent. In 1984, trucks increased their market share slightly, after declining for the 3 preceding years. Truck equipment will be ample for the remainder of the year. Although the number of new refrigerated trailers entering the fleet in the 1985 is forecast at 20,000, down from 1984's record 22,600, much of the new equipment consists of 48-foot vans. These large vehicles offer substantial capacity increases. Lettuce shippers can now load 6-8 percent more into a single van, while shippers of citrus and apples enjoy 10-11 percent increases. Since the operating costs remain essentially the same for 45- or 48-foot vans, the new equipment offers a real gain in efficiency. (Author) (Author)
