A SURVEY TO DETERMINE THE BEHAVIOUR OF A MOTORWAY FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT IN RELATION TO THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE LOADS TRANSMITTED BY HEAVY VEHICLES

This article reports a survey carried out with the use of video recorders and telecameras on motorway A19, to determine the distribution of loads transmitted to the pavement by the wheels of heavy vehicles, and the width of the two strips carrying 85% of these loads. The survey showed that the action of the loads were concentrated along two zones comprising an overall width of 3.00 m, also marginally affecting the shoulder. In order to determine the equivalent load per axle relative to a standard axle, it is proposed to adopt as a "coefficient of heaviness" the ratio between the 85% load passing in one hour and the width of carriageway affected by the load.
