EVALUATION OF A BICYCLE NETWORK SCHEME USING EMPIRICAL ROUTE CHOICE INFORMATION

October 1982 saw the implantation of a bicycle network scheme in a medium-size town in the western part of the Netherlands. This scheme consisted of a considerable extension and improvement of existing bicycle facilities. The plan was intended to make cycling safer, faster and more comfortable, and to promote bicycle use. An extensive before and after survey was carried out to evaluate the impact of the scheme. Changes in origin-destination patterns and route choice behaviour of cyclists formed an important part of the study. This paper describes the study design and compilation of origin-destination tables based on various sources of information. A crucial role is played by empirical route choice information obtained from a postal choice survey associated with a road side interview. For the covering abstract of the seminar see TRIS 450556.
