PROGRESS IN COMPUTERIZED STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF LARGE VESSELS

A comparison of the stresses from STRESS 1, STRUDL and FINEL analyses illustrates the close agreement for shear behavior of the framework and finite element analysis. With the increased use of computer techniques in plan review, many costly repairs may be avoided in future designs. Service experience of some of the earlier VLCCs is now available and data retrieval systems now in use will enable the surveyor to evaluate design details that may not be suitable for vessels in excess of 300,000 DWT.
