ANALYTICAL METHODS FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE SOURCE OF POLLUTION BY OIL OF THE SEAS, RIVERS, AND BEACHES

Recommended analytical methods for identifying sources of oil pollution are listed. These methods range from a direct gas chromatographic analysis of the pollutant sample as received to the determination of significant properties and components of a recovered oil fraction. Some of the methods have not been standardized, although they have been found satisfactory in oil company laboratories; in such cases the method details are given so that other laboratories can carry out the analyses. Reference is also made to the procedures to be used for sample collection and to the procedures for the recovery of oil from water and other extraneous matter in pollutant samples.
