DESIGNING AND MANUFACTURING AUTOMOTIVE ENGINE CONTROL MODULES FOR HIGH VOLUME PRODUCTION

Current high volume automotive engine control modules (ECM) are designed and manufactured for field quality and reliability. Their 50000 miles or 5-year warranty provides strong product development incentives. These incentives are met using high technology microcomputer architecture, advanced product design testability features, and advanced manufacturing tests. After reviewing a basic automotive engine control system architecture, the architecture of a specific 1985 ECM provided by Delco electronics is described along with its hardware and software testability features. The ECM's qualification program is then summarized and finally the production tests are described including: parts, assembly, and qc. (Author/TRRL)
