PAPER NUMBER 367. EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON PERFORMANCE OF LFA BASE COURSES FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS
The performance of various experimental pavement sections on a highway in India employing base courses made with stabilizing aggregates using lime and flyash (LFA) is reviewed. Some sections consisted of an LFA base course only. Others had layers of either water bound macadam (WBM) or bituminous macadam base courses above the LFA. This study is thought to prove conclusively the effectiveness of LFA aggregate base course by itself without any additional bituminous bases, as well as its capability of performing with any type of binder course above it if suitably surfaced. The bituminous binder and surface course laid over an LFA base course performed better than the WBM base course covered with thin bituminous surfacings over an LFA base. Its performance was also similar to the more expensive bituminous macadam base. base.
