ADVANCE TO AUTOMATION
In this discussion of the necessity for automation in rail transportation, the author considers what must be automated and how it must occur. The three main aspects of railway automation are; (1) automatic operation of the trains themselves; (2) automatic operation of the signalling system; (3) automated fare collection. In discussing a possible system of automation the author cites the Victoria Line as an example. The extent and reliability of computer operation is considered, as are safety and prevention of fraud.
