STATE NOTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS OF THE NRC REGARDING TRANSPORTATION OF NUCLEAR WASTE AND SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL. FINAL REPORT
As directed by Congress, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has ruled that advance notice of all shipments of large quantity radioactive waste or spent fuel must be sent to the governor of each state through which it is shipped. The notice requirement is informational to the states as an aid to the states' emergency preparedness planning. The notification rule does not preempt any state or local requirements for nuclear materials transport. Shippers are required to include route plans for spent fuel; schedule information related to spent-fuel shipments must be protected from disclosure by certain safeguards requirements. Agreement States are required to pass compatible rulings.
