STATE-OF-ART COAL SEMINAR: WORKSHOP RESULTS OF WHAT'S COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE IN COAL GASIFICATION PROCESSES

This article presents the results of a seminar conducted on the technology commercially available for coal gasification, production of methanol from coal, and removal of sulfur dioxide emissions from coal-fired plant stack gases. The following processes, developed by Davy Powergas, Inc., are discussed: (1) The Winkler Process for coal gasification, whereby various types of coal as well as coal tars and heavy fuel oils are converted into a low-BTU gas by fluid bed technology using either oxygen or air; and (2) the Wellman-Lord SO2 Recovery Process for removing sulfur dioxide emissions from stack gases.
