TRANSPORT OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL IN THE UNITED STATES: RESULTS OF A SURVEY TO DETERMINE THE MAGNITUDE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF DOMESTIC, UNCLASSIFIED SHIPMENTS OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS. FINAL REPORT
This is the summary of a project undertaken to provide a computer-compatible data base of radioactive material Transport (RAMT) information. The project attempted to (1) quantify the transport of non-military radioactive materials in the contenental United States, (2) establish a comprehensive data base off radioactive shipment data that will satisfy a variety of information requirements, and (3) prepare a final report that presents study results in a format comparable to NUREG-0073 (NRC-)SD, May 1976). The RAMT data base will include information on environment and risk assessment, policy development and analysis, transport planning and management, emergency response planning, and public inquiry. The various chapters of this report cover the project background and objectives; details of the 4 phases of the project; the licensee survey response and results; the DOE (Department of Energy) shipments of radioactive materials originating in the U.S.; spent fuel shipments from U.S. commercial light water reactors and reprocessing facilities; and comparison of the RAMT survey results with the 1975 Battelle survey. Appendices provide further information on data collection and the data base itself.
