ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS. CHAPTER IV. STORAGE AND TRANSPORTATION
The major areas of activity addressed in this chapter are monitored retrievable storage (MRS), transportation, and Federal interim storage (FIS). These activities were included in system integration analyses completed during the year. Analyses of component facilities and functions as parts of an integrated waste management system indicate that there are significant opportunities for improved efficiency. The role of MRS has been redefined. MRS designs are being developed that are sufficiently flexible to enable an MRS facility to perform a variety of waste system functions. A conceptualized figure of a MRS facility utilizing sealed storage casks is described. Two major, parallel and complementary tasks facing OCRWM in the area of its transportation responsibilites are discussed: the full institutional development of an integrated transportation system, and the technical development and construction of the system. 1985 activities to accomplish these tasks are summarized.
