ACCEPTABILITY OF PERSONAL RAPID TRANSIT (P.R.T.) IN EXISTING RESIDENTIAL AREAS

Personal Rapid Transit (P.R.T.), with access points within walking distance from the home, is often put forward as the principal alternative transport mode to the private car in urban areas. This paper examines the aesthetic, accessibility and constructional implications of developing such a system in existing residential areas and concludes that serious problems would be encountered along most existing residential roads which would seriously limit its extensive implementation.
