FARE COLLECTION: A CONSIDERATION OF DOLLARS AND SENSE

The degree of influence of bus fare collection equipment and operations upon bus design and the level of service is not generally recognized. New bus designs still only allow door widths for single stream entry. Surveying the types of equipment and operations used for fare collection shows marked differences between those used in the United States and in Europe. The European systems to a larger extent are based upon using tickets which in many cases are sold off the bus. A new development is a feasibility study of subsystems of an Intermodal Fare Collection System, being conducted by the Mitre Corporation for UMTA. This is a system where the value of bus rides (or train rides) is stored on a magnetically striped ticket.
