CHARACTERIZATION OF CRUDE AND RESIDUAL-TYPE OILS BY FLUORESCENCE SPECTROSCOPY

A new operational technique to pinpoint the source of an oil spill on a bench, river or harbor water. The new technique compares the fluorescence intensities and wave number ratios of the oil sample and has been evaluated for six different oils; results compare well with the results of infrared and metals analyses. The spilled oil should be sampled immediately, prolonged exposure to sunlight affects the fluorescence properties of the oil.
