SOIL POLLUTANT INTERACTION EFFECTS ON THE SOIL BEHAVIOR AND THE STABILITY OF FOUNDATION STRUCTURES
This paper discusses the soil pollution process, examines the mechanics of soil-pollutant mechanisms, and anticipates the implementation of these concepts to practical problems such as landslides. Three basic mechanisms by which the ground soil can be contaminated are described: by rainfall; by pollutants introduced as leakage from well disposal or construction of waste disposal facilities; and by hydraulic or chemical alterations which allow polluting substances to move within soil layers. The latter category covers physico-chemical decomposition processes, chemical alterations and bacterial attack, and leaching and ion exchange reactions. Each of these areas is covered in some detail. The effect of soil pollution on foundation structures is also examined. It is noted that the interaction of wastes and the engineering behavior of ground soil requires the focusing of attention on three interrelated aspects: the measurement of the soil properties of interest; the test equipment; and a knowledge of clay mineral elements.
