ESTABLISHING GLOBAL TRAFFIC FLOWS

Analyzes global vessel traffic (1969) with predictions to 1980 for all types of commercial vessels. The at-sea vessel population and resultant traffic flows are apparently increasing at a rate beyond present capability to forecast. Coupled with increasing size and speed, the safety problem is also increasing. Suggestions are made for forecasting and monitoring traffic flows in order to provide appropriate traffic information for future safe navigation in congested areas.
