TRAFFIC GUIDANCE AND PASSENGER INFORMATION SYSTEMS

SYSTEM FOER TRAFIKLEDNING OCH TRAFIKANTINFORMATION. DELRAPPORT

This report sets out the results of a project to develop a Swedish traffic control and passenger information system. The systems study included analysis of the functions which can be comprised in the system, the interest shown by traffic enterprises in the different functions, and then proposals as to which functions should be included and which priorities should be given, and the drawing up of proposals for the design and development of the system. The most important function is automatic collection of traffic information and journey time measurement. Development of hardware and software has begun. The system would comprise equipment in the vehicle, central control equipment and roadside sensors. The vehicle system is based on a microcomputer. The central control system receives information from vehicles and transmits directions to vehicles and also processes statistics. Roadside sensors locate vehicles, arrange priorities at traffic lights, record fuel taken on, etc. Parts of the system must be developed as modules which can be combined by traffic enterprises as they wish. The endeavour must be to standardise components and to document all designs and solutions. The first system to be developed is vehicle equipment for collection of traffic statistics. This requires a microcomputer, control panel and various counters. (TRRL)
