DEVELOPMENT OF AUTOMATIC CONTROL FOR SHIP'S POSITION IN MOORING

The authors have developed a system for automatic control of ship's position and also a special mooring winch that is suitable for automatic operation of ships. For this purpose, a model which simulates the mooring condition of an actual ship was designed and tested. It consists of the following: 1) A new type mooring winch which performs the functions of equalizing the tension of two wires, winding of wire at high speed and measuring of rope tension. 2) Two ordinary type mooring winches. 3) A model winch for the ship, having fly wheels which simulate the ship's mass and an oil motor which simulates wind force. 4) A hydraulic pump unit. 5) A computer with accessories. Varous tests have been carried out successfully with this model. The authors have gained the confidence to apply these systems on board ships and confirmed, as a result of the tests, that more safety and economy can be expected from the newly developed system by adequately distributing mooring force with the control of ship's position.
