CONTROL OF CONDENSATION IN SHIPS' HOLDS AND CONTAINERS

Instances of damage to goods from condensation are described and the disadvantages of several methods of humidity control are explained. The "Cold Finger" method is described, which is a portable refrigerator unit, wherein the air in the ship's hold is drawn over a cooled radiator, so that the air reaches a dewpoint temperature and allows moisture to be removed. This moisture is allowed to collect in a trough and is run away into a reservoir, or in the case of a ship's hold, is run through the scuppers. A modification of the Cold Finger unit which is used in the ship's holds can be applied to a container. In practice the containers after filling are dehydrated by means of the mini units to a level whereby the relative humidity of the atmosphere in the container will be maintained at a low level.
