Details are given of method of joining sections of a ship tegether while afloat by means of longitudinal as well as transverse welds. This unusual method has necessitated the development of a movable caisson to facilitate welding. The advantages of this particular method of construction are discussed and a procedure for building a 500,000-dw ton tanker is suggested.
